Located beside the Aragvi River and Zhinvali Reservoir, this centuries-old fortress complex combines Georgian history, architecture and spectacular natural scenery.
Ananuri Fortress was the stronghold of the Dukes of Aragvi, who controlled this important route through the mountains. The complex was built and expanded between the 14th and 18th centuries and includes defensive towers, walls and historic churches. King Erekle II considered Ananuri one of Georgia’s seven strongest fortresses. Today, it overlooks the beautiful Zhinvali Reservoir.
Take time to walk around the fortress, visit its churches and enjoy the panoramic views.

Standing at around 2,170 meters above sea level, high above Stepantsminda, the church also served as a safe place for important religious treasures during times of danger, including, according to historical tradition, St. Nino’s Cross.
